For the past 2 months I have MAJORLY been focusing on detoxification. I finished my detox seminar with the Institute for Functional Medicine and it really hit home that almost all disease stems from the toxic burden we are exposed to every day. I am LOVING the benefits it has brought to my health after focusing purely on detoxing my body.
I studied phase 1 and 2 detoxification extensively and how the gut microbiome even plays a role if we are actually able to excrete the toxins or if it gets recirculated back into your body. (I currently use a stool test for my patients to determine if they have high Beta-glucuronidase) I have been implementing both dietary changes and supplements to aid in detox(The first 2 days I took the supplements I SMELT so bad.. probably sounds gross to some but for me I was so happy because I knew that stuff needed OUT)
There are also physical things you can do to help your body detox and get your lymphatic system f l o w i n g
Today I want to talk about dry brushing and sauna because these are things almost everyone can incorporate (even if you don’t have sauna you just have to sweat!! HOT bath is another great alternative)
What is dry brushing and what are the benefits?
Dry brushing is basically exactly what it sounds like. It is brushing your skin with soft but stiff bristles and you do this when you are dry, for example, right before the sauna 😉
- Stimulates lymph drainage
- Softer skin
- Unclogs pores
- Decreases bloating
- Increases circulation
- Reduce cellulite
- Improves kidney function by getting rid of excess water
I have tried both dry brushing and sauna separately but then it hit me to use them together!!
The sauna works by excreting toxins from our blood and put through our skin. Common things found in sweat: Arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury, carcinogens, & BPA.
Unlike our circulatory system, our lymphatic system doesn’t have a pump so things don’t flow freely unless you help it out. Ever heard of lymphatic massage? Well dry brushing is a much cheaper and just as effective alternative.
Dry brushing before going into a sauna basically “wakes up” your SKIN and LYMPH and increases circulation (your skin should have a pink hue after dry brushing if done correctly) and toxins are more readily available to be excreted.
Another reason to dry brush prior to sauna is you’ll exfoliate all dead skin cells which makes it easier to clear the way for sweat/toxins to flow OUT freely !
In Eastern Europe and Scandinavia, bunches of green branches are often used, whereby the skin is gently swatted to activate blood circulation and to slough off waste before entering the sauna.
With all the toxins we are exposed to every day I hope you find this to be a helpful and easy way to start detoxing your body. I will continually do more post about how to detox because it is one of my FAVORITE TOPICS and I noticed huge improvement both mentally and physically (in myself and patients) since starting all of IFM’s detox methods.
