CBD, Health, & Autoimmunity

What is CBD?

CBD or cannabidiol is a compound that comes from both the marijuana and hemp plants. CBD does not have psychoactive affects. Many confuse it with THC, which is the part of the plant that does have psychoactive affects. Although both THC and CBD contain health benefits, people have recently been particularly interested in CBD due the fact that it is legal and does not alter your mind.

CBD has become a big hype both in the health and wellness community and in functional medicine practices due to all the benefits it contains.

How CBD works with autoimmunity?

Our bodies have an endocannabinoid system, which means are bodies produce its own cannabis-like compounds to maintain homeostasis or balance. This is why CBD works so well in our bodies and because we have receptors for cannaboids! There are CB1 receptors, which are found in the central nervous system and control things such as mood, memory, sleep, appetite, and pain sensation. There are also CB2 receptors, which are found in the periphery of the body, playing a role in immune and inflammatory response.

CBD comes in many forms such as tinctures, capsules, vaporizers, salves, creams, etc.

I have been personally taking CBD topically for cramps for 10 months. Due to the dysmenorrhea during my cycle, I used to take advil every month for about 10 years until I was introduced to CBD.

In those 10 months I never felt the need to take CBD internally as I have had all my autoimmune symptoms in remission for a while.

About 3 months ago, I was discontinuing a medication given to me by a mainstream doctor and my body had a rebound affect and my autoimmune hidradenitis started to flare. I decided to start taking CBD internally to support my body during this time. Although I was not thrilled about the flare, I was excited to be able to really see if CBD would impact autoimmune flares. Did it? YES, Was it the only thing I did to get into remission again? No. I set up a whole plan for myself with some other supplements, very clean meal plans and detox methods. BUT, I do believe I was able to go into remission much quicker with CBD than without it.

There still needs to be a lot more research with CBD and how it interacts with our bodies, if we create a tolerance, etc. but so far it has had outstanding effects and helped tons of people.

So far some studies have concluded CBD:

  1. Relives Pain and Inflammation

  2. Reduces Anxiety

My favorite CBD products

I have tried a few different CBD products/brands and found I have liked them all for different reasons. I’ll include links to the companies I have tried and if other brands peak my interest I will continually update this post!

Origin CBD

This company I had the honor of meeting the owner and hearing his vision for the company. He is so passionate about helping people with different disorders using CBD. He is a great resource for dosing, which route (oral, topical, vape, tincture), different disorders that have been successful with CBD, etc. This was the first brand I have tried internally and still use them to this day. I have tried the capsules (I have even given the 10mg/ No Terpenes to my pups!) and this is what I used when I was rebalancing my body from an autoimmune flare. I have also used their vapes (great for immediate relief of anxiety!) and my favorite that I use every single month is their CBD salve. I use it for menstrual cramps! They also now have CBD drops. I have not personally tried them yet, but this seems like it would be the most convenient way to get a daily dose in. This company also offers a custom formulation. Different strains can help different disorders and this is truly the future of medicine, everything being personalized. Such an awesome company!

Therapeutic Treats

So many of us are taking supplements daily and it’s a drag to add even more to the regime ! That is why I am hooked on TheraTreats!! They have CBD infused chocolates of all different flavors. It is such a fun (& tasty!!!) way to get CBD into your system when you need it! I am also very sensitive to stimulants (caffeine) in chocolate but since it is combined with CBD I can indulge all I want. You can tell Thera Treats are truly passionate about the health and wellbeing of their consumers because it shows in their ingredients. So clean and real. Follow them in Instagram for some unique ways to bake and eat their chocolates ! @theratreats

Thorne Research

A product Thorne Research carries is called Hemp Plus. This is not isolated CBD, it contains the entire hemp plant and different terepnes, plus they add both clove and black pepper for the added cannaboids found in them. It does still contain 10 mg of CBD. There product focus’s on calming nerves, gastrointestinal, and brain health. Legal is all 50 states. This is an awesome product for everyday as it is balanced and I trust Throne with their purity. They ship in their hemp from Poland. I use Thorne Research frequently with clients and I am so happy to have this product added !

I hope this answers some of your curiosity about CBD! If you are wanting to learn more and dive into research go onto Pub Med and type in CBD.

XOXO Roots
